iconDefinitionen

Was sollte er tun?

Computational Logic and Human ThinkingPassenger: A runaway trolley is about to run over and kill five people. The driver has fainted. You are a passenger on the train and you can press a button that will turn the train onto a sidetrack, saving the five people, but killing one man who is standing on the sidetrack. Is it morally permissible to press the button?
Footbridge: A runaway trolley is about to run over and kill five people. You are a bystander standing on a footbridge over the track. The only way to stop the train and save the five people is to throw a heavy object in front of the train. The only heavy object available is a large man standing next to you. Is it morally permissible to throw the man onto the track?

The Oxford Dictionary of PhilosophyProblem in ethics posed by the English philosopher Philippa Foot in her `The Problem of Abortion and the Doctrine of the Double Effect' (Oxford Review, 1967). A runaway train or trolley comes to a branch in the track. One person is working on one branch, and five on the other, and the trolley will kill anyone working on the branch it enters. Clearly, to most thinkers, the driver should steer for the less populated branch. But now suppose that, left to itself, it will go to the branch with five people on it, and you as a bystander can interfere, altering the points so that it veers towards the other. Is it right, or obligatory, or even permissible for you to do this, thereby apparently involving yourself in responsibility for the death of the one person? After all, whom have you wronged if you leave it to go its own way? The situation is structurally similar to others in which utilitarian reasoning seems to lead to one course of action, but a person's integrity or principles may oppose it.
Von Simon Blackburn im Buch The Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy (1996)

iconBemerkungen

Computational Logic and Human ThinkingIn an experiment (Hauser et al., 2007) on the Internet with approximately 5000 voluntary subjects, 85% judged that it is permissible for the passenger to push the button, but only 12% judged that it is permissible for the bystander to throw the man. The difference between the two cases is explained by the principle of double effect. In the case of the passenger pressing the button, the person on the sidetrack is killed as a consequence of the action of pushing the button, which is a subgoal of saving five people. The action of pushing the button is not bad in and of itself. So most people regard the action as morally permissible.
However, in the case of the bystander throwing the heavy man onto the track, the action of throwing the man onto the track is morally bad itself, even though it helps to achieve the morally good goal of saving five people.
