Over the past 80 years, the way that citation frequency was counted and analyzed changed dramatically from the early manual transcribing and statistical computation of citation data to computer-based citation data creation and its manipulation.
Author Cocitation Analysis: Quantitative Methods for Mapping the Intellectual Structure of an Academic Discipline provides a blueprint for researchers to follow in a wide variety of investigations.
