Cool Modes is a graphical modeling and discussion support system developed in the COLLIDE lab of the university of Duisburg-Essen.

Cool Modes wurde entworfen, um Diskussionen, kollaboratives Lernen und kooperatives Modellieren zu unterstützen oder zu ermöglichen. Das Akronym "Cool Modes" steht hierbei für Collaborative Open Learning and MODEling System (Pinkwart, 2003).

In Cool Modes stehen dem Benutzer verschiedene visuelle Sprachen und Repräsentationsformen zur Verfügung; die Palette reicht hier von unstrukturierten Sprachen wie der Handschrifteingabe (vergleichbar mit Notelt!) über semi-operationale Sprachen z.B. zur Diskussionsunterstützung bis hin zu Sprachen mit einer operationalen Semantik wie z.B. Petri-Netzen oder System Dynamics-Modellen.

Cool Modes is a collaborative tool framework designed to support discussions and cooperative modelling processes in various domains. This is achieved through a shared workspace environment with synchronised visual representations. These representations together with their underlying semantics can be defined externally by plug-in visual languages and interpretation patterns, so-called "reference frames". These can differ considerably with respect to their underlying formal semantics (e.g. System Dynamics simulation vs. handwriting annotation) but yet be mixed and used synchronously in the framework.
