Behaviorismus

Psychology as the behaviorist views it is a purely objective experimental branch of natural science. Its theoretical goal is the prediction and control of behavior. Introspection forms no essential part of its methods, nor is the scientific value of its data dependent upon the readiness with which they lend themselves to interpretation in terms of consciousness. The behaviorist, in his efforts to get a unitary scheme of animal response, recognizes no dividing line between man and brute. The behavior of man, with all of its refinement and complexity, forms only a part of the behaviorist's total scheme of investigation.

Bemerkungen über John Broadus Watson

Als der eigentliche Begründer des amerikanischen Behaviorismus ist der Psychologe John Broadus Watson (1879-1958) anzusehen. Seine Hauptwerke sind »Behavior: An Introduction to Comparative Psychology« von 1914 und »Psychology from the Standpoint of a Behaviorist« von 1919. Im Jahre 1913 schrieb er den berühmt gewordenen Aufsatz »Psychology as a Behaviorist Views It«. Watson wollte die Psychologie zur Lehre von der Kontrolle und Voraussage von Verhalten machen. Bei der Erklärung menschlichen und tierischen Verhaltens lehnte er radikal »mentalistische« oder »internalistische« Begriffe wie Bewusstsein, Wille, Absicht und Vorstellung ab. Bewusstsein existiert nach Watson nicht; so etwas anzunehmen, sei reiner Aberglaube. Verhalten kann ausschließlich über die Beziehung von Reiz und Reaktion erklärt werden und über die sich daraus ergebende Ausbildung von Gewohnheiten (hahits).
