Von Jay Cross im Buch Informal Learning (2006) auf Seite  251
Foundations of Educational Technologylearning that occurs outside the context of a formal setting; examples include field trips, museums, and incidental learning in the context of everyday activities; some informal learning environments are designed to complement or supplement a formal learning environment.

Handbook of Research on E-Learning Methodologies for Language AcquisitionLearning that takes place outside of institutionally defined contexts; for example, learning on the job and in one’s personal life. Web 2.0-Based E-LearningIn contrast with formal learning, informal learning is not organized and structured by an institution. It may take place in environments that have some connection with learning, such as museums and art galleries, or anywhere the learner chooses, including the home, workplace, or community.
Jay CrossInformal leaming often flies under the official radar. It can happen intentionally or inadvertently. No one takes attendance, for there are no classes. No one assigns grades, for success in life and work is the measure of its effectiveness. No one graduates, because learning never ends. Examples are learnmg through observing, tnal-and-error, calling the help line, asking a neighbor, traveling to a new place, reading a magazine, conversing with others, taking part in a group, composing a story, reflecting on the day's events, burning your finger on a hot stove, awakening with an Inspiration, raising a child, visiting a museum, or pursuing a hobby.

Jay CrossInformal learning, which we dig into in the next chapter, is nothing new. It is a return to the natural way people learn: through conversations with one another, trying things out, and listening to stories. Learning is how people adapt to changing conditions, and things are changing faster than ever before.
Von Jay Cross im Buch Informal Learning (2006) im Text Out of Time auf Seite  12
Jay CrossFormal learning is like riding a bus: the driver decides where the bus is going; the passengers are along for the ride. Informal learning is like riding a bike: the rider chooses the destination, the speed, and the route. The rider can take a detour at a moment's notice to admire the scenery or go to the bathroom.
Von Jay Cross im Buch Informal Learning (2006) auf Seite  236
Jay CrossIronically, 80 percent of corporate spending goes to formal learning and only 20 percent to informal. To teil you the truth, I pulled this figure out of thin air; it feels right. I'm aware of how much corporations spend on learning management Systems, instructional design, tuition reimbursement, instructor salaries, classrooms, and courseware. I don't know the tab for meetings, conference attendance, professional dues, pool tables, beer busts, expertise locator Software, watercooler meetings, and other informal learning investments.
