A wiki is a Web site that can be edited by anybody who is granted permission. In a business environment, that can mean a workgroup, a department, or even the whole company. The people who access the data and documents in a wiki are also the authors of the wiki, making it ideal for information sharing.
Von Ezra Goodnoe im Text Wikis at Work (2006)
Ward CunninghamFrom a technical point of view, Wiki rests on the World Wide Web and the ubiquitous server-client applications for this global infrastructure. The underlying HTTP protocol defines how client-server communications occur. A wiki understands the GET (request data) and POST (request to submit data) transactions in this protocol.
Von Bo Leuf, Ward Cunningham im Buch The Wiki Way (2001) im Text What's a «Wiki»? auf Seite  15
Lyndsay GrantThere is no absolute agreed definition of a wiki, but essentially wikis are simple websites that allow their users to create and edit content. Different wiki services offer different features, although they commonly include the ability to compare previous versions of a page, discuss issues prior to making changes and track who edited what and when.
I could probably write a very accurate definition of what a wiki is, but no one would believe me. The essence of wikis is that everyone brings their own lyrical definition to it because it seems that something so powerful and so personally moving should have a sophisticated definition, where in reality the true definition of a wiki is just as minimal as the code base.

Fernanda B. ViégasMartin WattenbergWikis rely on server-side technology that allows visitors to make instant updates to a web page via a web interface. Every editable1 page on a wiki site has an "edit this page" link that visitors can use to alter the contents of the page. Clicking on this link navigates to an editing view with a text field containing the page’s contents. The user can edit this text and submit a new version, which will immediately replace the previous one.
Von Fernanda B. Viégas, Martin Wattenberg, Kushal Dave im Text Studying Cooperation and Conflict between Authors with history flow Visualizations (2004)
In the traditional sense, a wiki system is a web site that allows anyone to modify its content, including changing the content of pages and creating new pages. It is thus a collaborative tool that communities can use to build site content. From the user perspective, a wiki is a collection of modifiable, hyper-linked web pages. In each of these pages, there is a menu of operations that visitors can perform, the most important being the edit operation. After invoking the edit operation of a page, the user is presented with an editable text area containing the page contents. The user can then modify the page contents and save changes to be immediately visible to others.
Von Chien-min Wang, David Turner im Text Extending the Wiki Paradigm for Use in the Classroom (2004)
Ward CunninghamAt the functional level, which is what the user sees, the essence of Wiki can be summarized by these statements:
  • A wiki invites all users to edit any page or to create new pages within the wiki Web site, using only a plain-vanilla Web browser without any extra add-ons.
  • Wiki promotes meaningful topic associa tions between ditferent pages by making page link creation almost intuitively easy and by showing whether an inrended rarger page exisrs or nor.
  • A wiki is not a carefully crafted site for casual visitors. Instead, it seeks to involve the visitor in an ongoing process of creation and collaboration that constantly changes the Web site landscape.
Von Bo Leuf, Ward Cunningham im Buch The Wiki Way (2001) im Text What's a «Wiki»? auf Seite  16
Wikis: Tools for Information Work and CollaborationThe term wiki is used to refer to both wiki sites and the Software used to maintain them. Wiki sites are collections of interlinked documents and files accessible and editable, by web browser. They are like websites that can be developed, modified and extended by their readers (and indeed when they are open to users on the Web, they are websites, collaboratively edited websites). As Software, wikis are collaborative authoring tools that are accessed through a web browser. Wiki Software allows a pool of authors to jointly develop a wiki site. The interplay between wiki Software, authnrc a n H wiki sites means that when we talk of 'a wiki', we often mean the ensemble of all these elements: the Software enables people both to read and edit the content of the site, while the site that readers see has been produced by multiple authors interacting with the Software to produce the resource.
Von Jane E. Klobas im Buch Wikis: Tools for Information Work and Collaboration (2006) im Text Wikis, from social software to social information space

Wikis make it easier to organize and compartmentalize work in small companies, which can be prone to a lack of explicit organization, while they help large corporations overcome the hurdles of task and information distribution (often over disparate locations) by aggregating critical knowledge.

Von Andreas Dieberger, Mark Guzdial im Buch From Usenet to CoWebs (2002) im Text CoWeb
Because a wiki stores information as both content and hyperlinks, each wiki entry is, effectively, a living document. The dynamic nature of wikis means that, at least in theory, the information they contain is more likely to be both current and accurate than in static knowledge management systems.

Mark GuzdialBecause of the unstructured nature of the CoWeb and given that each user may have their own opinion of what that structure should be, CoWebs may become disorganized fairly quickly. To solve this problem, there is often a user who manages the meta concept of the structure. Their main interaction with the CoWeb is to guide the interaction of the authors to better structurally define the space.

Don TapscottA new art and science of collaboration is emerging - we call it "wikinomics." We're not just talking about creating online encyclopedias and other documents. A wiki is more than just Software for enabling multiple people to edit Web sites. It is a metaphor for a new era of collaboration and participation, one that, as Dylan sings, "will soon shake your Windows and rattle your walls." The times are, in fact, a changin'.
Handbuch E-LearningWikis are like the human mind in that commonly referenced data is the most prominent in the "awareness" of the wiki. In other words, frequently accessed pages gain visual prominence in the wiki, which makes it easy for users to find the most up-to-date, useful information. One glaring problem with many wikis is that some documents atrophy through neglect, but this is a natural and expected result of any selective environment.
Von Ezra Goodnoe im Buch Handbuch E-Learning im Text Wikis at Work (2006)
Another barrier to wiki adoption is the geek factor. By the admission of all those interviewed for this article, wikis are still early in their evolution as corporate tools and often have a nonprofessional look and feel. Although employees access wikis through familiar Web browsers, what they find can be confusing or intimidating. The easiest way to reduce the nerd factor is to buy a commercial wiki rather than implement an open-source version.
Von Ezra Goodnoe im Text Wikis at Work (2006)
Using Wiki in EducationWiki is both a technology tool and a community forum, and is unique in that it has no physical counterpart. This makes it both challenging because there's no exact historical precedent to guide the development of wiki software, or the conduct of wiki sites. This is also very liberating, and an example of the era we are just entering with technology, where new tools only exist in the online realm because they take advantage of maturing architecture that is only possible online.
Von Stewart Mader im Buch Using Wiki in Education (2006) im Text Four Letter Words
While wikis aren't the best tool for discussions or real-time collaboration, they excel as resources for archiving documents and tracking workflow. In addition to Web pages, wikis can link to spreadsheets, Word documents, PowerPoint slides, PDFs - anything that can be displayed in a browser. They can also embed standard communications media such as e-mail and IM. In other words, they let users gather all the information and correspondence pertinent to a project within one central location.
Von Ezra Goodnoe im Text Wikis at Work (2006)

Wikis: Tools for Information Work and CollaborationWikis are causing a redefinition of what constitutes an authoritative or quality information source. Some argue that wikis are the tried and trusted System of peer review taken to a new level. Others point to a wiki covered in spam to justify their stance against the use of wikis as valid sources of Information in education. For many, wikis have become yet another reason to stress the importance of teaching critical literacy and the need to develop Information literacy for all students and staff.
Handbuch E-LearningWikis are perhaps the best example of the new tools available to managers. They are still evolving, but less for their technical incompleteness than because they are more evolvable than what we previously have had. In a corporate context, Wikis should be used for tasks that involve teamwork, complexity, and deliberation. They are hard tomanage, but very useful whenthey work. Properly used, they can free up collaboration and increase employee engagement. Improperly used, they are neither worse nor better than any other collaborative technology out there.
Don TapscottMany wiki users and aficionados say the benefits are linked to the ease and efficiency with which collaboration takes place. Tantek Celik, Technorati's chief technologist, uses wikis for everything - his work, his social life, bis voluntary activities, and for staying in touch with family. He says wikis distribute the bürden of organization across a collaboraüve network instead of making an individual project manager a choke point. "Now everyone can make incremental progress without having to wait for everyone eise." he said. "It's like parallel processing for people rather than computers." Celik goes so far as to suggest, "The ability to use wikis will be a required job skill in five years."
Von Don Tapscott, Anthony D. Williams im Buch Wikinomics (2007) im Text The Wiki Workplace
Mark GuzdialSurprisingly, security has not been a problem in either the Wiki or the CoWeb, despite its open policy. Each has backup mechanisms in place that can be used for damage recovery, whether malicious or accidental, though little malicious damage occurs. We have even been struck by how well-behaved (e.g., fewer flames, more courteous language) students are on the CoWeb compared to the same students on a newsgroup. We hypothesize several possible reasons for this, though we have not studied this explicitly. First, the public nature where anyone with a browser can visit may cause users to be more aware of their audience. Second, the persistent nature of the CoWeb (unlike a newsgroup, CoWeb pages are frequently revisited) may cause user to think of them as community property. Third, the web’s growing status in our society may cause users to respect a web space more.
